I'm not saying that I didn't have a clue...

But it will be good to see Norman slip into that persona eventually...

Before I forget...

How do you get the graphic logo on the PDF? I can convert graphics to PDFs using Photoshop but not without turning the whole script into images, which makes the file VERY big!

I use Adobe Acrobat. The title page is a separate PDF document that I merge with the rest of the script.

AWESOME! I can't wait! What made you decide to add 3 episodes? Before you seemed to be so convinced that 13 was the magic number.

Now to head on over to the Speculation board to bash out my thoughts. ;)

Thanks for including episode titles! It's gonna be a spoiler filled summer!

There were pacing issues that made it so that 16 episodes made sense. Season 3 will go back to 13 episodes, as well as season 4. Not sure after that...

This is just a general comment on things since I haven't read through the series quite yet, due to my being relatively new to the board and not having a whole lot of spare time recently. I'm a major Spider-Man fan, and, at one point, had even started developing my own virtual series based on the characters, although my version was more akin to putting a modern spin on the characters (ala Ultimate Spider-Man) than what seems to have been done here, which is to take a more 'Smallville'-style approach. I did have some time to read part of the premiere, and liked what I read, so when I get some more free time, I'll go back and finish reading.

1x11 "Memories"

And I'm back after a bit of a break, ready to dive back into the world of Gifts & Curses.

Once again I'm treated with a well written, nicely flowing episode. More insights into Pete's character are a welcome addition, but the real action takes place with Robbie and Craig as they take their investigation into Wilson Fisk to the next level.

We're in Alias territory here, with bugs, chases and gunplay to liven things up. There is a sense of things coming together, as Craig's and Robbie's activities will inevitably affect the lives of our younger protagonists sooner rather than later.

Then there's the added bonus of a small appearance by Doctor Strange, who I'm sure we'll be seeing more of at some point.

And what's this Chess Club Fisk was referring to? Another little mystery to whet our appetites for future episodes. Something this show is getting increasingly good at.

With only two epsides to go, I can't wait to see what'll happen in the finale. ;D

And a few lines that made me smile:

FURY:"You're late."
SPIDER-MAN: "Got tied up... Tying someone... Up."

VINCENTI: "You know, I’m a licensed psychiatrist. I’ve dealt with
mutants, poltergeists, ghosts, and now a real life super hero, but
there’s one creature I’ve yet to fully understand.
(off Peter’s look)
Women."

1x12: "Tonight"

This episode was a mixed affair. One of the problems with a heavily serialized show is that some episodes will inevitably feel like mere set up for greater things to come. In that sense this episode does a decent job, with a great cliffhanger ending to kick start what promises to be an awesome season finale.

But as a self contained episode, this is one of the weaker ones so far -- The Pete, M-J, Gwen and Eddie going to party plot not being terribly interesting. There were a few good moments between Pete and M-J as well as the fight between Gwen and Eddie over her drinking, which, may have seemed like over reaction on his part at first, but fits perfectly in with his bad experience with his own father. I'm glad you've decided to throw some kinks into that relationship, as the Gweddie ship was sailing a little too strong.

The purpose of The Chess Club was left a little too vague, but I'm glad to see Norman back in the picture again.

So, to sum up -- A decent episode that sets up the finale, if slightly weak on its own merits.

1x13: "Lockdown"

You...bastard. :P

The fourth act of this episode stands out as things heat up big time. Picking up directly from the last episode, with M-J kidnapped, the Chess Club out for Fisk's blood, and Peter stuck in the middle.

It all comes to an explosive head in said fourth act, with the biggest action sequence of the series yet. And then there's that cliffhanger, with M-J finding out Peter's secret right before... well that'd be the cliffhanger, Jay you cruel bastard.

Though the bulk of screentime is (rightly so) afforded to Peter's quest to save Mary-Jane, there's also the parts with Gwen acting up and impulsively taking off with her biological mother. Poor Eddie. :'(

All in all a worthy finisher to a great opening season that has been consistent in both quality of writing and story telling. Welcome to the elite club of show runners with a completed season under their belt, Jay! And keep up the good work!

1x10: X

Thought I'd at least try to give some sort of review this time. Expect random thoughts as I read.

Love the idea of an 90's theme dance - especially with Eddie as DJ.

This probably sounds silly but even though I love Gwen/Eddie (and Peter/MJ is pretty much a given at some point), I'm a little sad that this might mean the end of the friendship-foursome-dynamic I loved seeing the start of in the earlier episodes. After people start hooking up, it's kind of hard to go back to the way things were. But - even having said that - I feel bad for Peter in the Teaser when Bobby runs up. Bad timing.

Heh. "Lama of Lame". I love you, Eddie.

I think I'll probably be saying this all episode but there's great use of music so far.

Love the visual of the skull painted on the floor.

Okay, that was awesome. Great ending. I always listen to the accompanying music wherever possible and it worked so well at the end I got chills. Haha.

Overall, this was a really good episode. Quite possibly my favourite so far. Nice pacing, sense of flow and it hit all the right beats - at least in my opinion. Also a nice mix of both worlds - the student/high school angle and the mutant/Fisk/Punisher stuff - but they both had the same level of importance which was cool.

FAVE QUOTES

EDDIE
No Vanilla Ice! This is a disaster!

PETER
I’d ask how you’re doing, but the
blank stare kinda gives you away.

As you've now seen, you were dead right here. Pun very much intended ;)

It was left intentionally vague to some degree, but I can see how it could have seemed a little too vague. The plan was to make everyone think they were after Peter and were using MJ to track him down, but it was actually Fisk they were hoping MJ would lead them to. Or his thugs at least, who would in turn lead them to the big man.

It was the most action we had done to date, which worried me somewhat. Action's not my strong suit as a writer, I don't think, so I hope it came across well. The sort of dual cliffhanger was as much a promise of change as it was anything. Whether MJ survives or not, the status quo of the series will change come S2, which is my plan with each season.

Glad you think so. It was our heaviest use of music cues in season 1, and they played a more important role with the 90's dance and all. Glad to see they worked well.

It's a great song, "Creep." The original plan was to use Nirvana's "All Apologies" but I thought this one worked better.

Interesting comments. Some good points, too. I can't say that I really disagree with anything outright, though I don't really consider 1.09 our weakest ep. of the season.

One thing I will comment on, because it's something you've brought up several times, is the idea that Peter is and should always be the focus of the show. That's never been the plan. He may be the title character, and more often than not is the focus, but I never planned on him being the entire focus of the show all the time, like Clark is with Smallville or Angel on... Angel :P

I've always viewed G&C as more of an FNL type show, where even the lead (Coach Taylor) isn't a lead character in the traditional sense. In the end, the others are just as important long-term as Peter is to the show.

But I do see where you're coming from when you say that the show doesn't have its own set style. That will change come S2. It'll pretty much be 100% serialized with very few stand-alones, if ever. I think that's where the show is at its best, so it's where we're going to focus in the future.

Ouch my pride. I can see how everyone thinks that some of the problems with Addicted is that Peter isn't in it alot and Smallville-esqe plot of the story. Oh well better luck next time and thanks for the review.

After reading your 1.09 review, I'm almost afraid to see what you'll give 1.11 :P

I consider that our lowest point of the season, personally.
